Your Content Is Not a Monologue

The Art of Starting a Conversation

You’ve put in the work.

you wrote the blog post, designed the Instagram graphic, and hit publish.

And then… crickets

A couple of likes from your mom and that one supportive friend, but otherwise, silence. The lack of engagement can drive you mad, making you wonder what exactly your content is missing.

So, you double down. More posts, more content, hoping quantity will lead to connection. But it doesn’t.

Here’s the thing: for many wellness entrepreneurs, content creation has become a box to check. The goal is to publish. But what if the goal wasn’t just to talk? What if it was to start a conversation?

If your content feels like a monologue, it’s because you’re treating it like one. You’re delivering information, but you’re not inviting anyone in. Connection doesn’t happen when you broadcast; it happens when you create space for dialogue. Let’s shift the goal from publishing to connecting, from monologues to conversations.

Writing for Replies, Not Just Likes

A like is passive: a quick, low-effort nod. A comment, DM, or email reply? That’s engagement. That’s someone stopping to connect.

The secret to writing for replies? Leave space for them.

Most content loops are closed; they present information with finality. Instead, try opening the loop.

  • Statement: "Journaling is a great tool for anxiety." (Cool, but now what?)

  • Invitation: "When my anxiety spirals, I journal, asking myself, ‘What’s the kindest thing I can do for myself right now?’ What’s your go-to practice for moments like this?"

One’s a lecture. The other’s a friendly chat over coffee.

Tacking on “What do you think?” is fine, but let’s make it more intentional. Build the invitation into the content.

Tactics for Sparking Dialogue:

  1. Specific, Low-Stakes Questions:

  • Instead of: "How do you handle burnout?" (Too broad, too heavy.)

    1. Try: "What’s one small thing that helps you reset after a long day? For me, it’s five guilt-free minutes with my feet up."

  1. Fill-in-the-Blanks:

  • "The best advice I ever ignored was ______."

    1. "My nervous system feels most at peace when I ______."

  1. This or That?:

  • "Are you more: A) Slow, meditative mornings or B) Quick coffee and straight to work?"

    1. "What’s harder for you: Starting projects or finishing them?"

  1. Ask for Their Genius:

  • "I’m looking for a new podcast on creative burnout. What are you loving right now?"

    1. "Tech-savvy friends: What’s your go-to tool for managing digital files without losing your mind?"

Writing for replies means shifting your mindset from “telling” to “inviting.” Be less the expert on stage, more the host who asks, “What did you bring to share?”

The Power of the Story: Stop Teaching, Start Telling

Here’s the truth: people don’t connect with bullet points or data. They connect with stories.

You could post “5 Ways to Improve Sleep,” and it might get a few likes. Or, you could share a personal moment:

"Last Tuesday, at 3 AM, I was staring at the ceiling. My brain was a washing machine of client deadlines, a looming launch, and a weird comment on Instagram. So I got up, made tea, and wrote everything spinning in my head onto paper. No solutions, just letting the page hold it. Then I went back to bed and finally slept. It reminded me that sometimes, the answer isn’t a tactic. It’s release."

Stories build emotional bridges. They let your audience see themselves in your experience. In emotional and transformative wellness work, stories are everything.

How to Weave Stories Into Your Content:

  • The "I Used To…" Story: Share a struggle your client is facing. "I used to think setting boundaries made me the bad guy. Now I know it’s the kindest thing I can do for both of us."

  • The Client Story (Anonymized): "A client once realized she was treating her business like a boss she hated instead of a partner she loved. We worked on…"

  • The Behind-the-Scenes Story: Share a small moment from your day: a messy desk, doubts before a decision, your dog interrupting work. It makes you relatable.

People don’t buy from perfect robots. They connect with humans they know, like, and trust.

Repurposing with Purpose

You have one brilliant idea: Rest is productive. Instead of copy-pasting the same message across platforms, approach it like a kaleidoscope.

  1. Anchor Post (Newsletter or Blog): Share a personal story about realizing rest was key to solving a big business problem.

  2. Myth-Buster (LinkedIn): "Hot take: Hustling is just procrastination in disguise. True productivity is about better-rested hours, not more hours."

  3. How-To Carousel (Instagram): Break it into actionable advice.

  • Slide 1: "Rest isn’t quitting."

    1. Slide 2: "Tactic 1: Schedule a no-screen hour."

    2. Slide 3: "Tactic 2: Create a ‘Done for the Day’ ritual."

    3. Slide 4: "What’s your favorite way to recharge?"

  1. Poll Question (Stories): "Does taking a break make you feel: A) Genius or B) Guilty?"

  2. Face-to-Camera Reel: Share an off-the-cuff reminder: "If you’re exhausted, the most productive thing you can do today isn’t another coffee, it’s a nap. Your work will still be there when you wake up."

You’re not repeating yourself; you’re starting conversations in layers.

Conclusion: Connection > Content

Your job isn’t just creating content. It’s creating connection.

  • Stop churning out posts to feed the algorithm. Focus on depth, not volume.

  • Write for engagement, not just likes.

  • Build a real community around shared ideas and dialogue.

The goal isn’t to be the expert on a pedestal. It’s to be the host of a great dinner party, where your content sparks meaningful conversations.

Your real job? Listening to the answers.
